Talkback, the Mixer and Automute

Talkback is everyone's voice in a Session. The Mixer lets you balance what you hear, and Automute keeps microphones quiet while music plays. For the difference between Talkback and HQ Audio, see How HQ Audio and Talkback work.

The Mixer

Click Mixer at the bottom of your Studio. Each visible Guest gets a module with their Display Name, their Talkback and HQ Audio meters, a mute button for each, and whether their Talkback and HQ Audio are on.

These mutes only change what you hear, not what anyone else hears.

Before anyone joins, the Mixer shows just your own module, so you can check your microphone is working.

As the Host, you turn on a Guest's HQ Audio from their module. See Hear a Guest's HQ Audio.

Automute

Talkback is made for conversation, not for talking over loud music. Automute mutes your Guests' Talkback while HQ Audio is playing, so the music coming out of their speakers doesn't go back into their microphones. Only the Host controls it, from the Automute panel at the left of the Mixer:

  • Enable turns Automute on and off.
  • Mute All mutes everyone's Talkback.

To talk while Automute has everyone muted, press the T key. HQ Audio dips while you talk, so people can hear you over the music.

Three Automute settings are in Session Settings:

  • Enable On Session Start turns Automute on every time a Session starts.
  • HQ Audio attenuation when talkback override is active sets how much HQ Audio dips while you talk, from Off to 100%.
  • Automute feedback prevention briefly mutes incoming Talkback on your side while everyone else's mutes take effect, from Off to 5 seconds.

If you've turned on a Guest's HQ Audio and no longer need it, turn it off again. Leaving it on can make Automute behave unexpectedly.

Host Control

Click Host Ctrl to take control of everyone's mutes. While it's on, a Host Control On badge shows at the top of your Studio, and everyone is told.

Hover over someone's video and click their Talkback, camera or HQ Audio icon, or use their mute buttons in the Mixer, to mute it for everyone, at their end. The Automute buttons are greyed out while Host Control is on. They can't unmute it themselves while Host Control is on. This is useful when someone's microphone is picking up noise during a take.

Click Host Ctrl again to turn it off.
