Most people never need the Talkback plugins. You can choose your talkback microphone and speakers in your Studio like any video call app. Use the Talkback Send and Talkback Receive plugins only when one of these applies.
When you need them
- Your talkback mic isn't on input 1 or 2. Sessionwire only sees the first two inputs of the device you choose. If your mic is on input 7, route it through your DAW with Talkback Send.
- You want to process your talkback mic with plugins in your DAW. Processing in your interface, such as Unison preamps and Console plugins on a Universal Audio Apollo, doesn't need this.
- You need to hear Talkback on outputs other than 1 and 2. For example, send a remote producer's Talkback into a headphone cue system such as a Behringer P16, so the band on the floor hears their notes while tracking. Use Talkback Receive.
- You use Pro Tools with Avid hardware. Pro Tools takes over the Avid audio drivers while it's open, so Sessionwire can't use your Avid interface for Talkback. Run Talkback through Pro Tools with both plugins, or use a separate small interface or webcam mic for Talkback.
Send your talkback mic through your DAW
- Create a mono aux track.
- Set its input to the interface input your talkback mic is plugged into.
- Mute the track, so you don't hear yourself twice or cause feedback.
- Put the Sessionwire Talkback Send plugin on the track.
- In your Studio, click the arrow next to Talkback and choose the Sessionwire Talkback Send Plugin as your microphone.
Hear Talkback through your DAW
- Create a mono aux track with no input.
- Set its output to the interface outputs that feed your monitors or headphones.
- Put the Sessionwire Talkback Receive plugin on the track.
- In your Studio, click the arrow next to Talkback and choose the Sessionwire Talkback Receive Plugin as your speaker.
Record someone's Talkback
To record a person's talkback on its own track, record-arm a track whose input comes from the Talkback Receive track. This is handy for podcasts and voiceover, where the talkback mic is the one you want to keep.
