Produce a remote overdub with Sessionwire | Sessionwire Help

Produce a remote overdub

This is the workflow Sessionwire is built around. The performer records in their own DAW, with no delay and at full quality, while you listen in HQ Audio and give notes over Talkback, as if you were on the other side of the glass.

In this guide, the producer is the Host and the performer is the Guest. It works the other way round too.

Before the Session

  1. Send the performer the song, as a rough mix or stems, so they have something to play to. Drag the files onto their video during a Session, or share them from your Vault.
  2. Make sure the performer has the free Sessionwire Audio Plugins installed. See Download and install Sessionwire.
  3. Ask everyone to plug into their router with an ethernet cable.

On the performer's side

  1. Open the song in your DAW and set up the tracks you're recording, as you normally would.
  2. Put the Send plugin on your main stereo output, so the producer hears exactly what you hear: the playback and what you're recording. See the setup guide for your DAW in HQ Audio and your DAW.
  3. In Sessionwire, click the arrow next to HQ Audio and set HQ Audio Source to the Send plugin.
  4. Wear headphones, so the producer's talkback doesn't end up on your recording.

For drums or anything else with several mics, record every mic to its own track as usual. The producer hears your stereo mix of the kit through the Send plugin.

On the producer's side

  1. Click Mixer and click the Sessionwire wire icon above the performer's meters to turn on their HQ Audio.
  2. In the same panel, turn on Automute, so your talkback mic doesn't pick up the playback. See Talkback, the Mixer and Automute.
  3. Talk to the performer between takes, the same way you'd use a talkback button.

If you want a copy of the takes in your own DAW as you go, put the Receive plugin on a track and record it. Treat it as a reference: it arrives a little late and at streaming quality, so the performer's own recording is the one to use.

If the performer's DAW needs setting up, you can take control of their computer on Studio, as long as you're both using the Sessionwire app. See Remote Desktop Control.

After the take

The performer exports the new tracks, consolidated from the start of the song, and sends them. Drag the files onto the producer's video during the Session, or upload them to the Vault and share a link. File size limits depend on the Host's plan: up to 100MB per file on Basic, and no limit on Studio. See Studio Chat, Sessionchat and sending files.
